Hi all

I know that a few of you have sites hosted on a linux server (Phil springs to mind). Up till now my host company sends me my password and I upload on the SS FTP transfer.

I now have a site on a linux server. Do I go onto my control panel, set up a new FTP account and password then use that for my transfer.

I know each one will be different (contol panels and linux etc) but just need pointed in the right direction.

Annie,
Whoever your host is should send you your ftp username and password along with any further instructions. They should have sent you that directly after you set up your site. I do not use the internal feature built in to SS, but I use Filezilla a free ftp client. For the sites I manage, some being on Linux, I do nothing different- I just use the information given to me by the host.

Thanks Jrazz

I thought the password they gave me was for the control panel - it is for both uploading and control panel. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

They told me to publish to public_html and so I am left with this www.outdoordiscovery.info which is clearly not right. Have tried public_ftp and /htdocs but still getting this page.

Any ideas??

Annie

Hi, Is your published page in public_html named index? It's not recognizing anything you have in that directory.

Annie, in agreement with what primal1 said- make sure you named it index.htm or index.html. That should make it work.

Thanks guys
Still missing something. My host said I had uploaded a public_html folder instead of publishing into it. I thought the public_html was the linux equivalent of /htdocs folder so I put that into the built in part where I normally put in /htdocs.

Obviously missing something and the more I look into it the more I can't see it.

You need to publish your files one level higher, alongside the folder cgi-bin/. As your host said, you have created a public_html folder that you don't need.

Thanks Bruceee

How do I do that using the SS FTP publisher. I have hit a blank and can't dig myself out!

Annie, I can see your page when I open the public_html folder you placed there. Do you have cPanel access to your site or some other control panel through your host? What you need to do is open up the original public_html directory, move your published pages into it from the new public_html folder you created. Then delete the newly created publc_html folder to eliminate confusion. Your site should then show up just fine.

Or just delete the whole newly created public_html folder and republish into the original public_html directory only.

My brain is slowly starting to defrost Smile

I have a control panel and I have deleted the new unwanted public_html folder that I created by mistake.

I now can see the folders on my FTP manager on the control panel.

I am guessing that I am going to publish something both from the SS FTP aND through my control panel. I can see the public_html folder in the same level as CGI as Bruceee said and then the 'browse' button. Am I then going to browse for my project. hmmmmmm

Annie,
Not knocking SS's FTP service, I just find things easier to do with using a stand alone FTP client- such as Filezilla. It is just drag and drop. Drag your files to the appropriate folder and you are done.

You may find the "Publishing Your Project" tutorial helpful. About half-way down there is a section on the FTP tab and browsing to the correct folder of your site.

Once you get that done, the rest should be easy Smile

Well I knew I was missing something so simple and thankfully I found it.

The difference was /

Without it I was of course creating a folder, with it I was publishing TO a folder.

Thanks everyone, I could do it as well through the Linux control panel but will experiment with that another time!!

Glad things you are getting things worked out Annie. I agree with j razz, get a stand alone ftp client. It's capable of doing much more than just transfering files. You can use it as a remote control panel. You can transfer, delete, chmod and more using one. There are a few very good free ones around.

I have the control panel with the linux server, I will play around with it once the whole site is up and running.

I have many sites on hosting alone, I wonder what the advantages and disadvantages are of having a linux server. time will tell.

Thanks again
