Hi,
When I use the text editor to write in Greek, Greek characters are diplayed correctly in the preview html page.
But, when I write Greek characters in the Code editor, then greek characters are not displayed correctly. This only happens in the code editing mode. Is this a bug?
Thanks,
pavlos

You may need to set the default character set for the page. See details here

Like I said, the problem is with the Code editor only, where Greek characters are not displayed correctly. There is no problem with the Text editor which displays greek characters correctly.

Yes, I understand. If you do not have the correct character set for the page, the Greek characters may look ok in the text editor but not the the code editor.

Have you set the character set? If not, try setting it to ANSI.

Setting it to ANSI makes no difference. Now, I set page editor to Other, insert in the field just Greek,(nothing else), then greek text in the code editor is readable, then save and close produces scrambled text in the page, but in the html preview is readable.
The common character set is iso- 8859-7, but it still produces scrambled text.Weird isn't it?

Ok, first make sure you are using the latest SiteSpinner (ver 2.50f).

If you are and it is still not working, can you send us an example .ims file (with both text and code objects) that shows the problem. We will take a look to see what is going on.

Send it to vmsupport@virtualmechanics.com and put "code problem with greek characters - palos" in the subject line.

Hello Pavlos,

Thanks for sending us your files. There definitely does seem to be a problem with using Greek ISO characters. I cannot read the ones in your text file within notepad either. They appear as "Arial Normal:Åðé÷åßñçóç, Ðñïúüíôá" etc.

I am going to pass this on for a more detailed investigation but keep in mind that there in no "International" or "Greek" version of SiteSpinner at this time so it may be that there is no simple solution. We do have customers successfully using other languages (e g. Norwegian) but the native Greek character set may be a different kind of problem.

The issue of non-English characters inside links may be resolvable with the FAQ I pointed out earlier. I will let you know if I can find a workaround for the rest.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Also, please note that this seems to be related to characters from the Greek version of Windows. In the regular Windows it appears we can use greek characters without a problem. For example, we can paste these characters ØßØß in text or code objects as long as we set the charater code correctly (to ANSI in this case)

Code should work similarly to text. Titles work differently (the page's character set does not affect titles) but for Greek characters, in a US version of Windows, we don't see a problem.

For code try using the ANSI character set (in the page editor).
For the title, make sure the font support greek characters. Try with Arial to be safe.

Try copying these characters into your title and code: ØßØß

Does that work?

If not:
Can you describe what happens? Is it okay in any of the three stages: text editor, work space window or preview window?

What language is your Windows version?
What version is your Windows? i.e.Vista, XP win 98 etc.?

results could be seen on this link.
That's code object, wich could only be seen looking at HTML and not on page; while title does not let paste the letters you gave me.
Text has always been ok using the appropriate characters.
Preview works same as publishing.

xp english it's the answer.
Thanks Harpo

Try setting the character set to 'Other' and entering iso-8859-1 there.

Does that help?

Hmmm... when I use ØßØß on a computer with the English language selected and an english code page, it works as expected in code and titles but if I select the Greek language, then SS stores the title and code as question marks.

But... in your sample page, I can see in the source that ØßØß are there in the code object. So it looks like if you changed the code page to iso-8859-1 that the page would appear correctly even if the workspace did not.

Either way, I think the developers will need to do some work here before we can better support non-English laguanges.

hi Harpo.

i think(for title) we are talking about different things. I'm referring to title editor. That is of no use at all.

While as you said code editor does...!!! yeah...!!!

The web engine is a good product.Probably without it i would not have had the opportunity of learning so quickly what i already know about web site.
Still sometimes as a consumer i would have been more satisfied if i was sure something was really going on to solve basic prolems as languages (which means indexing in my case) more than having explosive animated or dynamic web pages wich we already know is never going to happen unless you know java or php or...

anyway web engine it's like having an old car you care about. You complain but you still go because you know it's trustable.

I agree :"Either way, I think the developers will need to do some work here before we can better support non-English laguanges".
Thank you all.
