Can anyone help when I build a page in SS and I want to give the page a color or image as a background how can I keep my work area or the area that I have all my objects in white without creating a table.

Place a white rectangle behind the objects on your page. To get it behind, use the 'To Back' button on the bottom toolbar.

And set re-render off for the rectangle -- that way you don't create an image file. (Quick Editor > Object tab).
