How do I have a small (thumbnail) turn into a larger version. In the quick manager there is an "open in a new window" command but how do open this new window? and how do size it?

Hello dougo,

You can have a link open into a new window. However, at this time you can not specifiy the size of the window. Generaly what happens is that new window will open to the size of the current window. If you want to link an object, such as an image, and have it open in a new window when the user clicks on it, open the Quick Editor and enter the page (or image) you want to link to under the Links tab, and select the 'Open in new window' box. When you Preview or Publish, the new window will open when you click on the object.

Hello Derry
I'm sorry to seem thick but I still don't understand. If I put a photo onto page one I can then render it down to a thumbnail with quick manager. So far so good. I now have a thumbnail. Where is this new window and how do I find it? I have no trouble linking to objects in other pages do I just keep adding a new page for each larger photo?

Is there a confusion over Re-Sizing and Rendering here?

Hi dougo,

The easiest is to simply link your thumbnail to your larger picture. You do not have to create another page to do that. Select your thumbnail, open the Quick Editor and select the Link tab. Now link to the original image (something like mypicture.jpg ), and click the 'open in new window' box - that's it.

Now, the only problem with the above is, if you use the 'Gather' option when you Publish, your 'mypicture.jpg' image won't be uploaded. If you do use the 'Gather option, then do this: The first time you Publish your project to your site, select your image, open the Quick Editor > Object tab, and un-select 're-render'. Now Publish your Project using the Gather option. Now re-select the 'render' option and re-Publish.

Let me know how you make out.

Dear Derry,
I have sorted it out thanks to your last info, and now find that I can click on a thumbnail and it opens the main picture.
My next action will be to reduce my photos to thumbnails on my web site. I already have my site up and running so I presume I just follow the instructions in your second pargraph.
Thanks

Hi dougo,

If you know that your images have already been uploaded to your site, then you do not need to do the 'un re-render' trick I outlined. This was just a 'trick' to get SiteSpinner to upload your images.

If you are creating thumb-nails of your images in SiteSpinner, make sure that 're-render' is selected.

Dear Derry,
You asked me to let you know how I got on. The system worked as far as it happened when I tested the site. When I uploaded the page the thumbnail showed the cursor turning to a hand but nothing happened. I tried your "trick" re uploading pictures and noticed that the picture was uploaded but when I checked the re-render box in Object Editor and then uploaded again it didn't upload the picture. I now must have uploaded it 10 times in all sorts of combinations and it still doesn't work.
What do I do now?
Regards
Dougo

Hi dougo,

This is the gist of what is going on. When you load an image into SiteSpinner and then Publish, the image is automatically uploaded to your server. If you do not make any modifications to your image (such as resizing, etc.) then the image is uploaded as is. Now, if you do make a change to the image then a copy is made (so as not to lose the original) and the copy is given a new name - this is the default 'render' option. If you uncheck 're-render' then the image is just stretched or shrunk in the html code (which does not produce as good a quality). Now when you Publish the copy is uploaded to your server and the original is not.

Now, if you want to create thumb-nails of images and then link them to the original, if the original is not on a web page then you need someway of uploading them to your server (remember, because you shrank the image, SiteSpinner created a copy and gave it a new name - this is what was uploaded). So, what you do is Publish your page once with your image on your page, but un-check the 'render' option, then the original is uploaded. You then re-check the render option and Publish again.

You need to make sure that the thumb-nail is linked to the original image - select the thumbnail and open the Quick Editor > links tab. Where it says www. replace that with your image name (mypic.jpg or whatever your image is named).

If you still encounter problems post a link here for us to look at.

Hi Dougo,

OK, a couple of problems.

First, it seems to be a syntax issue - you need to be careful what you name your files, be it web pages or image. Certain characters throw your web server off. You may be able to use them on your local computer, but not on your website. on you Gallery page you link to an image named J.T.M.jpg - you can't have periods in a file name. You should also avoid caps (so your image should be named jtm.jpg).

The other problem is that your image is trying to link to your home computer - select the image and open the Quick Editor. click on the Links tab, leave the link type drop-down blank and simply type jtm.jpg for Link (keep in mind you have to follow the instructions from the previous post to upload your newly named image to the server)

Dear Derry
Ureka! It works. I'm sure the explanation in the instruction manual is fine for people who "know" about building a web site. As a "wet behind the ears" first timer your final explanation made everything clear. Maybe you could include this in the thumbnail section.

Hi Dougo, glad to hear you got it sorted out. Be sure to submit your site to the Gallery if you have not already done so (http://www.virtualmechanics.com/products/gallery.html)
