I have created a drop-down menu activated by a mouse-over. The menu is a list of text links to other pages. On each of these pages I have a Back link to the page with the drop-down menu, but when you return to the relevant page, the menu has disappeared and has to be mouse-overed again. I can see this being an irritation for visitors, so is it possible to get the drop-down menu to stay visible until a "close" button is clicked, please?

Many thanks
Trik

Hi Trik.

I'm sure there's a way to solve this. Do you have a link to the site so we can have a look at the 'Menu', it will make it easier for everyone on the forum to sove the problem.

Thanks,
Tonga.

You could publish to an iHostVm trial site -- your publisher should have this option.

I have not heard of an iHostVm trial site, Brucee. My site is a limited-size, limited-bandwidth freebie provided by my ISP, so I am not sure if I would be eligible for such a thing anyway.

If I cannot get the drop-down to work properly, I shall probably cheat and create a link on the original page to an identical one with the menu on it. It increases file-size, but if I clone most stuff, it shouldn`t be too bad.

Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

The iHostVM trial site is a feature of SiteSpinner and can be found when you activate publishing for your project; look for the tab labeled iHostVM. Using the iHostVM publishing option will allow you to use a free test site which will stay active for 24 hours. After you publish your test site, you will be given a link to the site which you can post here.

Thanks for that, Larryd. I have now loaded a much-reduced version of my webpages, which can be found at www.ihostvm.com/trialsite260416. The drop-down only works on "Birds", and on the drop-down, the only page to link to is "finches". You will see what I mean about the drop-down closing again on return from the linked page. Also, although I have grouped the drop-down and its "close" link (which is an invisible square over the X text button) the link hand still appears on mouse-over. Apart from that (!), it works OK, although I am still leaning towards my cheat method as mentioned earlier.

Thanks again
Trik

Actually, I am not used to having pop-up menus like yours stay open when I navigate back to the home page. Most times only collapsible menus will act this way.

I get different behaviors when using Firefox and IE. With IE, the menu always closes when I am returned to your home page. With Firefox, if I use the link button on the finches page to go back, the menu is closed, but if I use the browser's back button, it stays open. But I'm sure this has something to do with the browser caching the page.

I do not think you will be able to use the SS mouse effects to do what you want. The problem is that when the home page is reloaded, the initial state of the page is restored which means the menu is closed. The only way I know to get around this limitation is to use your own javascript on-click event handlers for the menus and tie them to cookies which can then be used to restore whatever menu was opened. This is basically what collapsible menus do.

Thanks for the information, Larryd. I don`t think I want to get into Javascript, cookies and suchlike just yet. With a limited website such as I have, it isn`t in the public domain so they seem an unnecessary complication for what is, after all, just a photo album. I hate to admit defeat, but my cheat idea is looking more attractive by the minute. Smile

Thank you for your help.
