I don't think people would search directly for "1981mm" but may combine it with some other term like "door".
I'm not a fan of mission statements anywhere, especially web-sites. They all say the same things -- I think "mission statement" = boring = "go-somewhere-else". Just my opinion But as you have another reason for a mission statement, I suggest put it on its own page. If Google can find one obscure page, (doorsizes) it should be able to find another! It would be an interesting exercise to run a search on all the pages of your site to see how often you use the leading search terms "1981mm", "door", "2040mm", "pine", and compare with "carpenter, "joiner" and "Sheffield". If you have a serious skew, then you need to use your favored terms more in your text, especially on the index page. |

I also highly doubt anyone would type in "1981mm" when looking for a joiner in sheffield
They may type "door fitting sheffield" some good points Bruceee. But how do I search my website for the reocurrence of words/keywords? |

Google is a law unto itself. I don't think you can safely deduce what Google might do from what Lynx does. Except for one thing: if Lynx doesn't see something, chances are Google won't either.
If you don't have a search program, there is one built into Windows under Start > Search. I suggest search the all html files your local publish folder -- look for a different keyword on each pass. |

Lots of good info here but as pointed out, some of it may be dated by now. And the thread has wandered a bit from the original question which I'd like to share a comment on.
Getting your site indexed for the first time. There is one very simple way to get your new site indexed/crawled and quickly, usually within hours, certainly within a day. We'll assume that: 1. Your site is complete and published with good content. 2. The internal linking has every page cross-linked to, from most pages. Ok, now you're ready for big daddy (Google) to take a look at your site. What you need is a link back to your 'Home' page from another site that gets indexed/crawled frequently. Blogs are the perfect way at this point to get that first linkback. For the simple reason that, most blogs automatically 'ping' the search engines the second a post is made. This tells the SE spiders to come index the new content. You can start a blog of your own, but this requires your time and thoughts to keep a blog going. But it will work, just blog about your site's main topic and include a link or two to your site in the content of your post. Most new blogs are indexed fairly quickly. Or you can go to someone else's blog about your topic and make a comment, including a link to your site of course. This is my preferred method and the one I'll go into some detail on here. So lets find some blogs about your topic. We could search Google / Blogs for this info and would find tons of results. But this way doesn't show us everything we'd like to know, up front. Things like; the blogs PR, the tag status of Follow/NoFollow, search by blog type like wordpress, blogger etc. and other variables. In the past I've used a FREE program called 'Comment Kahuna'. It's available here: http://www.commentkahuna.com/ You do have to register and they won't spam you, maybe an email a week, sometimes a product version update. I always use a email address like my gmail for signing up for stuff like this. Comment Kahuna is very easy to use, just be sure to create and save a profile first thing. It'll return up to 50 results, show you PR, Follow/Nofollow status, set the minimum PR value. It has a built in browser to take you to each blog. You can comment or skip to the next result. This program can get you that first backlink. I've been checking out another program called Fast Blog Finder, the free version returns 50 results and much more info. The paid version is $49 and returns all the results for that keyword term. So far this is the favorite of the two and the one I'd recommend trying out the free version of. Find it here: http://www.fastblogfinder.com/ Making Comments
The main thing is just to get a post out there with a link, I've had a site hit by Google in less than 6 hours and 80% indexed in just a few days. Just from ONE posted comment. I didn't do anything else for that site, no other links generated in any way. Within 2 weeks had some search terms in the top 20 and within a month was getting visitors from top 10 search result listings. This was all from Google as Yahoo and MSN seem to be much slower in coming around and then getting you listed in the results. After this site was going and I'd seen the result of just one link, I did continue to get links from more blog posting as well as getting listed in a few choice directories. A note of importance; build your linkbacks slowly, seems to be some chance of a penalty for acquiring too many, too fast. This topic goes allot deeper than what is touched on here. There are many ways to get backlinks so your new site is seen by the search engines. I do use most of those others methods as well but the blog comment is my 'go to' for that first linkback and crawl. Oh yeah, it will usually get you some human visitors as well. Bonus. Hope this helps and as always, your mileage may vary... wrr Oh, one more thing here and this is important. When you fill out the info to post your comment on a blog, put a keyphrase in the 'Name' slot. The reason for this is that many blogs automatically link that name field to the 'URL' field. Use different related keyphrases in different blog postings. You can tell if a blog does this by hovering your cursor over the Name on someone else's comment. See if a URL shows in the bottom left of the status bar on your browser. If so then another bonus, a keyphrased linkback for you. This message has been edited. Last edited by: wrr, |

Excellent post wrr.
I have now done a quick blog with links to my website. I also submitted a new site map to google as the old sitemap was not ok with google. After doing this I have got new, more usefull set of keywords I also changed my keywords on 'page properties' so they matched the content on my pages. Not sure if this helped, maybe. |

Hi folks
a lot of good information around here about SEO. My 2 cts. to this is : A #1 ranking boils down to - Your site has to be better then your competitors in respect to ON-page SEO and OFF-page SEO. To know more about this I recommending to read one of the best free guide about SEO I know of. "SEO Made Easy" by Brad Callen. You can get it at one of my Squidoo Lenses here SEO Elite Review Lens It's a PDF download. Brad Callen is a SEO pro and at my lens you find besides some SEO tips a short review about his SEO software "SEO Elite" with which you can achieve very good indexing results if you are have a comercial website. SEO can be done all by yourself, you don't NEED a software or to pay a professional SEO guru - but it takes time. So to use a software is basically a matter of saving you time and telling you exactly what to do to become better then your competitors. Happy read. There is some good info here. SEO is complex and people get paid well to make it work (software may or may not work for you much of it cause only short term results).
Note: Back links still have value if used the right way - if you use backlinks to try and scam google (back links that have nothing to do with your topic) then you will get caught eventually and google may very well de-list your site. However, your sites' content structure, description tags (despite a previous post), title tags and H1 tags play a very large role. But please be realistic with Search Optimization (particularly national or global search). Unless you pay someone or take the time to really research and learn SEO then you may not be on page one for all your desired keywords - we are not Dell or IBM. Nor do we have their budgets. So, perhaps you should focus first on local search optimization. That is, let people in a specific town or state find you first. There is a real difference between the search result for: 'I need a dentist' OR 'I need a dentist in boston'. Because Boston becomes a unique local qualifier that national companies may not have (or need with their SEO budgets). Though I made the searches up, try for your self on google. Now localizing will not be for everyone -but, if no one can find your site now.... NOTE: As far as indexing specific words; YOU CAN control (to a huge degree) what is indexed. You do this by making sure that your relevant 'keywords' or 'keyword phrase' show up in each of the above mentioned areas. Do not over kill however, keep them to about 2- 4% of the total word count for each area. As mention earlier, be specific. General, national phrases may require much more then I am mentioning here. A real easy way to optimize is for local traffic (i.e. my product in boston). Say you are a dentist in Boston and set up a website. Then you could optimize your site using the following example (code not included): Tittle Tag: My Dentistry Co. | Dentist In Boston | Boston | Dentist | H1: My Dentistry Co. is a dentist in Boston. Our Dentist has been serving Boston and the local are for 10-years. As a dentist in Boston, we strive to provide the very best dental care possible. Description Tag: My Dentistry Co. is a dentist in Boston. Dr. S has been a Dentist for 15 years and has been a dentist in Boston for 10. If you live in Boston and need a dentist call us today. Content: talk about being dentistry (techniques, procedures, ect... and dentist and boston multiple times in the first 2 short paragraphs). Avoid content that has nothing to do with your websites' theme. Content is KING! I do not use reciprocal links with other sites. Instead, I focus on internal links in my own site. In the above example, I would have a page on pet supplies. So, hyperlink the word pet supplies when it first appears. So long as you do not have 'No Index' meta tags google will follow the link. These techniques will get you on page one in google for LOCAL searches. Good luck. |

We are trying to veriy our site with google. A meta tag is required which we have inserted in between <head> and </head> using the Custom Meta Tag on the sitespinner page editor for our index page. Google still can not find our site to verify and reports an incorrect string yet we copied and pasted the string from the google site. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Can you post a link so we can view how it is being published?

We publish through sitespinner and the site uploads fine. Google tells us to insert the following meta tag between <head> and </head>.
<meta name="verify-v1" content="MbvcN56GKSwG82aqSDOZ08Gdkj87nNyWZ4YAx6TWZNM=" /> When we try to verify google says the tag should be "MbcvcN56 etc". /the meta tag we found is <meta name= (some letters & numbers removed for security) That is all they say...they do not show the entire string that is wrong. I don't know what link to post for you? |

What is the URL address of your site page containing the meta-tag? I would like to see what SiteSpinner actually put inside the meta-tag. Most people have problems with the Google verification tag due to typos.
Use the Page Editor→Title, Meta Tags tab. At the bottom there is a "Custom Meta Tag" section. In the Name field, enter "verify-v1" (no quotes) and in the List field (this is the same as content), enter the verification code Google gave you (again, use no quotes). SiteSpinner will automatically format this information into a valid meta-tag and insert in into the head section of your page. If you are already using the Custom Meta Tag section for another meta-tag (such as robots or author), then you can go to the Page Editor→Header tab and enter the meta-tag into a custom header. However, in the Custom Header text area, you will need to enter the meta-tag exactly as given to you by Google; i.e., <meta name="verify-v1" content="MbvcN56GKSwG82aqSDOZ08Gdkj87nNyWZ4YAx6TWZNM=" /> |

I do not see anything wrong with the meta-tag. Check that you have the correct verification code. I do not know if there is a typo, but in the example you gave above, the code you used and the response you gave from Google do not start with the same characters ("MbvcN5..." vs "MbcvcN5...")

We seemed to have solved the problem with the google meta tag. We copied and pasted the tag a number of times and it seemed to have been accepted the last time. Still not sure what we did but thanks for the help. |

I may well be a cynic but as google is a buisness this is not rocket science.
Getting back to the subject adsense will probably improve your presence within googles search engine |

Sorry can't resist to add my worthless imput !!
Basically repeating what has already been said NO one knows how Google ranks/rates pages it's all guess work and here say so everyone has their own opinions. Mine are as follows Having loads of links to your site improves your rankings, a load of old RUBBISH ! My last but one website that has been on the www for a couple of months still does NOT have a cached page in Google, yet it does In Yahoo. If you search in Google for "Andys Plastic Model Kits" In the Quotes you get 3 Pages and 29 links to my site yet NOT one of then is my actual website lol. My personel opinion is Google is utter rubbish even though it is my home page ;-) The second favourite is updating your website regularly improves rankins, a load of old RUBBISH !! lol again :-) I've tried that on some of my sites and it made NO difference what so ever. My other sites that are ranked ok I haven't update for ages and ages and there ranking in search result doesn't drop of, it just stays the same ! This is MY experince of Google over the last 3 years with 10 websites, if the above works for you then good luck to you, if you haven't tried the above them try them, you have nothing to loose One SURE fire way to get you site a mention on Google within 6-12 hours is to think up some lame reason to make a video about your website and put it on YouTube, if you try there are loads of excuses to do this. Then you can put a link from the video description to your site and Google will cache that just about imediately. Another way is to post your website on relevant forums such as here as Google picks those links up pretty quickly as well. At the end of the day I agree with Bruceee 100%, make your site Interesting for a Human to look at with good navigation and have some content that isn't replicated on 100's, 1000's of other sites on the net and if the search engines are any good at their job then they will link to it. I'm kinda also in complete agreement with Adaptor, slap Adsense all over it and you will get better rankings. Example if you search for 'free animated gifs' and you will most likely get page after page of garbage websites covered in adverts with liitle or NO content, yet my own Free Animated gif site with NO Adverts and over 4500 gifs is probably on about page 300 or something if that, and it's been on the net for years... grrrrr amkes me Very cross. Oh well that's my ranting opinion done, probably totally wrong as normal lol. Regards Andy |

Hi Andy, I did a quick look up of your website and found the following problems:
Meta tags report for: http://andysqualityfreegifs.110mb.com/ meta tag length value Title: 89 Andys Quality Free Gifs, Thousands of totally FREE Animations / Gifs for your enjoyment ! Meta tags analysis. Title: This tag contains too many characters. This tag contains 89 characters. This is too many for what we would consider a 'robot friendly' web page. The maximum number of characters we recommend for this tag is 80. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Description: Found no description meta tag. The description meta tag is used by most of the search engines. Consider to add a description meta tag. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keywords: Found no keywords meta tag. The keyword meta tag is still used by many search engines. Consider to add a keyword meta tag. As you can see from the results your website is not optimized for search engines. What I did with 1 of my sites was to enter each page url into meta tag analyzer and then adjust my info as required, Meta tag analyzer gives you a list of keywords found on your page, just enter the keywords and fill out Title & description for your page based on these keywords. Basically all the info in your meta tag needs to match with your page content for seo Do this for every page on your site and try to get each result 100% or as near as, this will improve your search engine results. The search term 'free animated gifs' inculde this phrase in your Title, description, and keywords and in your page content repeat the phrase 5-6 times or more and you will see much better results Enter my site 'www.woodfx.co.uk' in to the meta tag analyzer and check the results to see what I did Do you have a google account? Have you submitted a google site map? As this will help This message has been edited. Last edited by: Adaptor, |
