I must be going mad, for the love of me,
I just cannot work out how to set up a link using SiteSpinner, no problem doing so with other software I've used. My new website is 90 finished but cannot get links to work. Problem. Load index page, click on photo, which I want to use as a link to another page. can i use photo as link, or do I have to put in a text link, hidden behind photo ?? Surely I do not have to publish page, before you can test links What I want is to test all pages and links before pubishing, when I'm satisfied, publish then Upload.. to replace my old website.. I know I'm doing somthing stupid. but I canot see where. must be going senile, or I have eaten to much beef Help please !!!! LM |

Hello Lawman,
I'm not sure if you mean you can't add the link or you just can't test it. To add a link to any object, just click on it then go to the 'Link' tab in the Quick Properties editor. Enter your url there. If you want to link to other pages in your project, select the "-page-" link type then choose a page from the url list. To test your project just preview it (the >> button). All the links will be active. |

Harpo,
Thanks for getting back. Thats what I thought!! but it does not happen. because, I click on lets the Photo, of candy, It will not let me link it to candy's page, as the page is still shown as candy ims file, the only way to change it is to publish it. so it becomes candy.html, even then until you up load it to the server, the url www.cosmickatz.co.uk/candy.html would not work, or am I missing something simple here?? do you follow ? Hmmm... I'm not sure what you are trying to do.
If the page for candy is part of your project, that is, you have a page called 'candy' and another page (say 'cane') in the same project (i.e. the same .ims file), you can link to candy from cane by selecting "-page- candy" as the link. You still need to 'preview' to see the actual web pages and try the links. If the page 'candy' is not in your project, or in a different project, then you are right, it needs to exist on a web server before you can actually link to it. If you have candy and cane in two different projects, your can merge the projects using the menu item 'File->Append...'. Harpo |

they are both in the same project,
infact I have 8pages in the website, on the index page I have three photo's and a row of buttons at the bottom of the page ie: candy, tufty, squeaky, by clicking on any of the photos should take you to their respective web page click on candy's photo should take you to candy webpage, click on any of the buttons, again should take you to their web page, home / facts / awards / health / and so on. since my last posting I installed my old web design program, and started converting my old website with my new ideas, have done three page's with links all working. But for some reason I just can not get the links to work, with the web pages using SiteSpinner, all I get is page cannot be found!! Its obviously not the program, but something I seem to be doing wrong, and your tutorial does not go into making links, very well hope that explains it better, as I have spent a month now getting nowhere, and am ready to call it a day, and go back to using my old program. Ok, it should work then. Try this:
First, with your 'index' page open. right-click on the 'candy' photograph and select 'Quick Properties' from the pop-up menu. Then, in the Quick Properties dialog. click on the 'Link' tab. The first field on the link tab (top left corner) is a 'link type' drop down list. Select '-page-'. The second field is a drop down url list. Since your selected '-page-' in the previous field, the url list should now contain the names of all your pages. Select the name 'candy'. (If you don't see the name candy, make sure the candy page exists in the project) Now preview the project by pressing the menu item 'Publish->Preview HTML Project' (It is important to preview the project not just the page so that all pages are created) You should see the index page previewed. Clicking on the 'candy' photograph in the preview should open the 'candy' page. If that doesn't work, something is wrong. Check what url is actually being created by right-clicking on the candy photo in the preview (assuming you are using Internet Explorer) and press the 'Properties' option. That will bring up a dialog that shows the Address (url) of the link. What does that say? Also there was a bug in older SiteSpinners where sometimes if you deleted pages in a project, the page page links for remaining pages did not work correctly. (make sure you have version 2.00d - click the Help -> About SiteSpinner menu item). If all that still doesn't work, if you send us the .ims file for your project, we will try to see what the problem is. Harpo. |

I think I know what I have done wrong, I am hoping now you can tell me, how to put it right, after I created my index page, instead of going in to page editor to create candy's page (page 2). I went into the file menu and clicked new project, and of course I now have 8 seperate pages, but sitespinner is looking at them all as Individual site's In my old web creator program, I just click new page, and then when finished, just link them together, But I can see now in sitespinner you must use the page editor to create a new page, simple when you know how. Now is there any way I can link all the pages to-gether, or do I have to start again from scratch. I knew it was me, that was doing somthing wrong, but I could not see the wood, for all the trees. A lesson learnt the hard way, if all else fails, read the bl**dy instructions LM |

Harpo I appended all the 8 pages, now I can get my links to work, I also found out why i was having so much trouble with the photo link, I layered one photo on top of the other, so when you do a mouse roll over the photo changes. but the link was only applied to the top photo. so when the mouse was over the photo, the one without the link was showing, so would not work. Many thanks for your time LM |

Hi lawman,
Keep in mind that in order to add a new page to your Project, you just need to click the Append New Page icon on the top tool bar (page with a + sign). - Derry |

i was also working on adding links to my web page - i have reviewed your responses to lawman in regards to this but it unfortunately has not helped. when i click on the object and attempt to add a link the drop down box reflecting type of link only lists mailto and http - not page type so that i can continue to construct the pages locally prior to publishing. (this is my first web page so please excuse my ignorance here!)
thanks in advance, stephanie |

Hi Stephanie,
It sounds like you are using WebDwarf. WebDwarf does not have the ability to create multiple pages in a project so there is no 'page' option in the link type list. You can still link to other pages that you create in WebDwarf but you mut use the 'http' link type and must publish the pages to your web site before the links will be active. SiteSpinner has the mupli-page feature. You can download the free trial from our web site if you are interested in that. Harpo |

Hi Everyone,
I, just like Stephanie, have read the above and I too failed to really get anywhere. However, I applied some very basic DTP practice, and it seems to have worked. You see, if you have produce a detailed and well designed Index Page, with lots of Buttons and a few decorative bits and bobs - of course you need to maintaim design continuety To simple select a "New Page" means you have to now cut and paste all the nice design bits to the new page - well when you have 70 or so separate design features on your page that can take time especially when you have 25 or so main page section to produce. So what I have done is simply "Copied" and "Pasted" the whole page Design (Created a clone) Given it a "Name".html" then striped out the content, put in the new content relevant to that page, then stepped back to the orignal page, and created a link/button on that original page, linking to the newly copied and pasted page. I then put the projest up to review and tested the links and they worked! am I missing something, will this all fall apart when I "Publish the Project" to the Web. Come back and tell me, Please. Hi Mark,

Hi,
Ok I have got 21 buttons linking to 21 pages, I have tested the link in "preview" all seem to work as they should. However, button 21 seem to block any further linking activation back up the list. I tested the links sequentially and randomly up and down, but the minute I hit 21 I can only use the "Browser" back button to get unstuck!! Can anyone help - do I need to recode button 21 or add something to the code to release the block? Regards Mark |

Have you tried deleting the link and then ading it back in again. In other words creating this link from scratch?
And dont forget to add your web site so we can all view it. |

Hi Toubleshooter,
Sounds a bit odd - do you have a link we could look at? - Derry |

Hi AndyP and Derry,
Thanks AndyP, I am trying you sugestion, I will come back and report! I will of course also let you on to the Trubleshooter site when It's up and running. Derry, thanks for comming back - no link at present but I will deal with it, once I've got the site spead to optimum levels. I have downloaded a "Website Spead Simulator" so that I can adjust the site upload time to accomodate the majority of Visitors running at 28.8 kbps - you see the Trublshooter site will be content rich, and TXT alone is seriously boring and I need to input vibrant colour (within reason) and Full Colour Graphics to ensure full "in-your-face" impact Regards to you both. Mark. |
