Here's the Help entry in question... note the bold part...

Selecting an Object Hidden Behind Another Object
Find the object on the page that is hidden behind another object (using the Tab key or referring to the object list)
Press the Shift key.
Click your mouse on the object.
The object is now selected. You may move it with your mouse pointer to a different position on the page, transform it in the Work Window, or double-click it to open the Object Editor dialog box to edit its properties.

While the SHIFT key is held down, subsequent clicks will select the next object is the Z order. So even if you have several objects stacked you can reach them all.

I can select objects that are completely underneath the top object by using Shift, but there seems to be no way to actually move those objects. Any attempt to do so will just select and move the top object again.

Is there something I'm not doing or understanding correctly?

Thanks much,
Shaz

If you are using the Shift-Click method, when the desired object is "shift-clicked" to view, hold the mouse button down and drag the object (even while holding the shift key).

Okay, thanks a lot, Larry.

That's not really explained well in the Help, though. The instinct is not to hold the mouse button down when you click it.

Anyway, I'm glad it works!

Best,
Shaz

Once you shift-click an object to the top, it is supposed to be the active object, but I have found that it does not always stay that way. The mouse action is a lot better than it was, and holding the mouse button down is a good way to make sure of what you have selected.

Also, keep in mind that now the topmost object is always selected unless you hold the shift key. So if you shift-select down to an object, then release the mouse and click again to move the object, you will select the object on top. But ... you can drag the sizing boxes of an active object, even if it is below another object.
