We are on a network that uses "Folder Redirection" to keep AppData and Docs on our servers. The path that SS wants to save the "fttpro.ini" file in is: "\\Server3\UserApplicationData\USERNAME\Application Data\Virtual Mechanics\Bin". The \Virtual Mechanics\Bin file was not created automatically. The file "fttpro.ini" is nowhere to be found. Because Server2003 is redirecting the folder, it wants to keep the folders as "read only", and I can't seem to get around it.

Is there any way to have these SS folders and files relocated on the local drive? I didn't want to jump into Regedit without first asking.

Also, I just downloaded the trial version "f", if for some reason that is the problem.

Thanks!

SiteSpinner uses the CSIDL_APPDATA folder value to select the folder for storing application data. As I understand it, roaming folders are usually mapped to a local drive and data is copied from the server to that location when you log in. Nonetheless, your system seems to be telling SiteSpinner to use a folder on a server. It may be that for some reason that folder read-only (which it should not be for application data) or that SiteSpinner is not able to write to it for another reason. We will look into that to try and find out if there is something SiteSpinner can do to help with that scenario.

In the meantime, as you suggested, you could change the registry so that SiteSpinner uses a local directory.

Don’t try this if you are not comfortable editing the registry and don’t change anything other than what is described below.

CHANGING THE WRONG PARTS OF THE REGISTRY COULD CAUSE SEROIUS PROBLEMS WITH YOUR SYSTEM! (Although if you only changes the SiteSpinner areas, the worst case would require a re-installation of SiteSpinner)

So ... this how to change the application data folder that SiteSpinner uses:

There are 3 kinds of data stored in the application data folder: the publishing profiles and the url list in a 'Bin' subfolder and the user editable spelling dictionaries in a 'Spelling' subfolder. It gets a little complicated because of the dictionaries which need to be set up manually.

1. Shut down all copies of SiteSpinner.

2. In your registry editor go to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Virtual Mechanics\IMSSpinnerV2\Directories” and find the key “AppDataDir”

3. Change the value of that key to the folder that you want to store you data in. E.g. “C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Virtual Mechanics\”.

- Be SURE to include the last backslash
- Check to make sure that the new folder exists on your computer. Create it if necessary.
- The folder must be read/write accessible so don’t use “ C:\Program Files\”, for example.
- The publishing profiles, the url list will be created automatically, in a sub folder called “Bin”, the first time you use them.

4. That’s it for the profiles and url list. If you start SiteSpinner now, it should find the profiles file when you open the Publisher. It will create a new file if one does not yet exist.

The spelling dictionaries files (if you want to use them) must be copied manually and then setup in the spell checker options.

To setup the spell checker dictionaries:

1. Create a folder called “Spelling” inside your new application data folder.

2. Copy the six .tlx user dictionary files from your installed program files’ spelling folder (usually “C:\Program Files\Virtual Mechanics\Spelling\”) into your new spelling folder (e.g. C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Virtual Mechanics\Spelling”). The files are accent.tlx, html.tlx, correct.tlx, sscream.tlx, sscrebr.tlx and userdic.tlx.

3. In SiteSpinner’s text editor go to the menu Options>Dictionaries to open the Dictionaries dialog box. You will see error message saying the dictionaries could not be found. You can ignore those.

4. Click on the ‘Add File’ button and browse to your new Spelling folder. Find the first tlx file, select it and click ‘Open’. Do that for all 6 files.

5. Close the Dictionaries dialog box and exit SiteSpinner.

That’s it . Of course if you reinstall or repair SiteSpinner you may need to do this again.
