I was working on an SVG file which I was both saving and publishing regularly. When I realized I would need a second page, I decided to change the "svg page name" and save under a new .ims file. I have done this many times before.

After making what boils down to the .svg and .ims file name change, saving, and publishing; half of my data is missing --- and, strangely, is also missing on the original data set. The original published files were of course intact.

This sort of thing has happened several times now wherein data previously saved and recoverable suddenly goes AWOL. --- but not the entire data set, just some of the objects. The objects are listed as still being present but the link between the address and the data has been severed (ie it knows that the data is there somewhere but not where it is.)

I'd wager a small sum that the problem started at the point where the selection "Page/Editor" stopped going to "Page Select" and goes straight to "Meta Tags." I raise this, wild and silly as it might seem, only because there is a correlation in my case between losing objects and making a change to the page name.

It could well be that a flaw was exposed in the last release (199S) which also introduced the feature you mentioned above. It is unlikely that they are related but does help pinpoint the onset of the problem.

We have had another similar report and are looking into to this. If you are are to give us exact steps to reproduce the problem, that would be very helpful.

Otherwise, we will let you know what we find as soon as we have a solution.

I remember how I lost the data only because it was absolutely ordinary.....almost.

a) Had existing ...ksbaland.svg /.ims files
b) Files had been saved and published numerous times.
c) Changed ...ksbaland to ksblanx in "box" on work page.
d) Selected Page/Editor/Meta Tags and changed file name.
e) At this point did a "save as" to ksbalanx.ims
f) Saved again (Menu) for "good luck."
g) Tried to Publish. It started and stopped.
h) Program locked.
i) ctrl,alt,del for non-responding program
j) ignored "recover request"
k) opened up file and half of objects were missing although the object names were still listed.
/////////////////////
Have since replaced data. It won't publish with Web Engine, but published with ease with an outside FTP client. All data present.

Sorry I didn't talk about the publishing business; thought I had until I re-read it.

You know, "S" doesn't have a good "feel" to it.
I know exactly how stupid that sounds but ;;;;;

Thanks,
RC

I am rebuilding the data set which lost its data. Out of curiosity I clicked on the missing background object "bkgd1" from the drop down menu. A 100x100 box appeared instead of an 800x600 box. I expanded it and clicked on the Shading editor. The Shading editor had exactly the same parameters already yset that I had created originally: "shd1" ...Yet when I go to the Object editor to claim "shd1", it is blank.

What would you like me to try?

Thanks RC,

We have some samples of corrupt files similar to what you describe but what we really need is an uncorrupted ims file (with the image files if images are used) and instructions that, when carried out, ALWAYS result in a data loss.

That may be a lot to ask for in this case but once we can reliably reproduce the error we can put the system on the debugger and then easily see where the problem is. We are trying create a reproducable error in house right now.

Without touching anything else; I created a new 800x600 rectagular object, and -- before I could even rename it --- "shd1" just jumped right in. I didn't do a thing.

I then renamed, saved, and published without difficulty -- then deleted the original background object. Strange stuff.

There are little things I haven't clearly focused on, but "S" just isn't stable. Happy hunting and thanks, Harpo. By the way I was able to solve the .doc to .rtf conversion problem. Stupidity,,,no, that's too harsh...it was complex!!!
