Q: I created my webpage and inserted images into it. When I Preview the images are there. However, when I Publish my site to my server the images are not there - what's up with that?
A: There are a few things that could cause your images to appear when you Preview, but not appear once you have Published your site to your webhost. The first thing to check is your image names. Web servers are quite finicky when it comes to naming files. Some of the things that can get you into trouble are the use of caps, the use of spaces in the name, and the use of special characters. So, if you image is named something like this - mY Nic@ picTure.jpg try renaming it to - - mynicepicture.jpg Another potential problem could be the file paths. When you Publish your file you have the option to use 'Gather' or 'Relative'. If you use Gather then all of your images are automatically gathered and placed in the same directory and your webpage is adjusted accordingly. If you use Relative, then the file paths are set to where they are on your hard drive. You will need to use another FTP program to upload your files and ensure that your file paths match what you have on your Hard Drive. Lastly, you should check the size of your images. If they are excessive then the ftp transfer may time-out before the image is upload (if that is the case then your images are much too large to be on a webpage!). what you can do is select the image and then open the Geometry Editor, change image type to jpg (if it is not already) and move the quality/file size slider down. If this does not help then you might want to consider using a photo-editing package to reduce the file sizes, or use another ftp application to upload the files. Lastly, if you have used the 'Include' function with an image, and then you alter that image on any of the pages then it will be altered on all pages - be sure to Publish all the pages that you have Included that image on. - Derry [This message was edited by Derry on September 29, 2003 at 11:31 AM.] This message has been edited.
