Hi,

This is both old and new; and if there is a point to be made it is the relative ease with which it, and many variations on the theme, can be accomplished in SVG.

There may be a bug as manifested by the difficulty I had getting the title to stop in the centre (i.e. stop period) until it was actually centred. I also have the Don Quixote overlay offset vertically downwards about 10 pixels to get a match after the action.

This item is more of testing page than anything else so please judge accordingly.

Shading can be surprisingly difficult if you work with semi-transparency rather than full transparency because of the blending of the overlay with the underlying object.

Footnote: For reasons I don't intend to elaborate on for a change except to say that my fight with Microsoft has now become truly viscious; this will be my last animation work in SVG for the forseeable future.

Hi Muzz
Is that a vicious fight or a viscous fight? - I suppose with Microsoft, either is possibleWink

Are you quitting SVG altogether or just animated SVG? And why? Just curious.

Hi Bruceee,

I stand corrected on my spelling. For starters, this is fact and not paranoia. This is not due to viruses, trojan or hackers. This is Microsoft taking an inordinate interest in both the software choices and internet viewing habits of Robert C. Smith. And what is "this"?

It is Microsoft in various subtle ways and not so subtle ways sabatoging my ability to operate certain of my software. It is Microsft petulantly and hypocritically objecting to the fact that I use Opera instead of IE; Pegasus instead of Outbck Diggery-Do; Jarte instead of WordPad: 602 PCSuite Pro instead of MS Word; Winamp instead of MS's musical toy and etc. And so forth.

There is more, much more, but as I am now engaged in the process of going very public with this that is all that I wish to comment on.

Opera for some strange reason (which I am quite disappointed VM haven't pursued) will not handle SVG animation although otherwise it is the SVG browser of choice. I am denied access to IE, and the clones are now not working a s advertised. Thus animation work is a dead issue both from a functional perspective and, now, a matter of principle given my views of MS.

I have no intention of abandoning SVG; not on your life: it is too good a tool. That eventuality will only occur if if I abandon Windows when I get my new computer --- which, unfortunately, would also be the end of Web Engine.

The stakes are very serious in this matter Bruceee,

Since you asked,
Cheers,

Muzz

Hi Muzz
Thanks for the clarification. Many users, me among them, prefer to see static pages instead of animated. Animation=Advertisements. So it ain't all bad -- non-animated SVG will be just fine.

Good luck with the battle

Hi Bruceee, ....pardon the typos; Opera goes off screen and I can't see what I am typing.

I basically agree with you and argued the matter out with Derry quite some time ago. Animation as it is currently used on the Net is usually just a "gimmick"-- something to catch your attention and annoy you sufficiently to act accordingly. But I do have a philosophy as to when animation may possibly be appropriate.

Besides being an ex-geophysyicist, I am also a budding grammarian (believe it or not!) I have an essay somewhere which I wrote to show that building a web-page and writing a paragraph are closely related processes. Animation from tis perspective is appropriate to those objects and attributes which convey action and thus would be described with a verb and adverbs in a paragraph.

It is quite fascinating to view a web-page from this angle. My mature work will, hopefully, thus find truly meaningufl uses of animation to complement my heavy use of colour, symbolism, and a format designed to tell a story. (My work isn't as simplistic as it appears when you understand the symbolism and the story line.)

Thanks for the interest. There is much viewing and little commenting in the forum.

Cheers,

Muzz

Footnote: ... just checked out a link while reconstructing Knox and I see that Mozilla have taken a major public stance in accelerating their support for and development of 2D graphical capabilities. ... and VM beware because they specifically mentioned SVG and animation and increased cross-platform support.

Hi Bruceee,

I don't know how to word this, but never assume that anything in the world is untouchable because of its apparently unassailable nature. This is being typed in Internet Explorer courtesy of some bargaining done on my behalf by a third party. Thank you Microsoft is all that I have to add. SVG animation is now again live and well, time permitting.

Hi Muzz,

Not sure why we should beware, the more native SVG browsers available the better.

Hi Derry,

And I am not sure why I posted the animation. Wink

... simply a mild concern over market share based on the cross-platform aspect. On the positive side you are certainly correct. I have detected a slight stagnation in the SVG movement and this could be a big boost. Mozilla have been talking about SVG forever but accomplishing little.

Always with your well-being in mind,

Muzz
