I want to add the industrial symbols such
as valves, lamps, switches and etc to the left toolbar from Import Foreign SVG Objects. then I want to use the IMSEngineV2 for MMI. Is it possible and how? |

Hello infoland,
I don't know what MMI stands for? If you have an SVG drawing of the valve, lamp etc. you could just drop each in the code editor as SVG code, if they are individual SVG files, add them in using the Foreign object Editor (they won't be visible as images until Previewed). If you mean can you add your objects to our tool bar then the answer is no. You should test what you want to do out with a trial version of Web Engine V2 (http://www.virtualmechanics.com/products/engine/download.html). - Derry |

Hi Derry,
Educate me please if you will. I was going through the the list of presentations on SVG at the Open in Vancover, and was absolutely staggered at the diversity of its uses --- which relates to the above. If you judge on the basis of web-site usage alone; one gets a very misleading picture of the degree of use SVG is receiving in everything from cartography and animation of flowing glaciers to industrial uses. Illustrator 10.1 now accepts SVG imports. The times they are a changing. Thrax |

Hi Thrax,
Yes, SVG is being utilized more and more in many different industries. Not sure what you would like me to educate you in!? - Derry |

Hi Derry,
I suppose my questions are, "Do you see tangible evidence that SVG is continuing to evolve and grow if not outright flourish; and do you see, perhaps, a change in direction, or emphasis, in the manner in which it is being used?" (And, I guess, implicit in the above, if the answer is "yes," does it have any impact on VM?) We used to look to acceptance (integration) by the major browser(s) as a measure of the growth of SVG. Based on that, I became extremely discouraged over SVG's future based on the Opera animation situation. Taking a fresh look at the situation, however, I am beginning to believe that the increasingly diverse use of SVG is a better measure of its acceptance and harbinger of its future. It isn't just a tool for making "pretty pictures." EvolGrafix have a major new release planned for early next year; I am sure that I read somewhere that Adobe are planning to integrate SVG with the Acrobat Reader; and the Illustrator note above; suggest to me that I had become unduly pessimistic aboug SVG's future. Hi Thrax,
OK, this is where I magically transform into 'MysticDerry' and prophesize as to the future of all things SVG... To answer each of your questions: "Do you see tangible evidence that SVG is continuing to evolve and grow if not outright flourish..." Yes. SVG is continuing to grow, though I would not go so far as to say it is 'flourishing' just yet. The fact that Corel has hitched their wagon to SVG, and more importantly, the continued work on the Adobe SVG viewer are positive signs. However, rumblings from MS are somewhat mixed. On the one hand we hear word of SVG integration, but at the same time we hear words of competing technologies... Does this have an impact on VM? Well, yes, to an extent. We make tools that people want. If no one wants a tool they can create interactive SVG animation with, then why create one! Now, from our perspective that is not the case at this time. Our challenge is to create a tool that can export Interactive Animation that is easy to use, and then give people the option as to what format they want to export to. - Derry |

Thanks a bunch Derry,
I still think that SVG is a fantastic tool for quite a number of purposes and and approach both it in general, and animation, with renewed enthusiasm. For no other reason than historical precedent, I have been anticipating a new release of WE and have been holding off starting any new projects until that occurs. Does "mystic" Derry see a Christmas present chugging down the track? Unoffical of course. Adobe have a standing member on the W3C so I suppose with their revitalized interest some good things could happen. I find "Wiki" to be the best single source to stay abreast of general developments. Thanks again, Thrax |
