Hi Derry and Harpo,

I am going to pursue, politely, the issue of SVG animation and scripting languages with Opera both in their forum and by other available means --- especially now that I see that they are also in bed with Adobe.

(a) The first question I have is: "Are scripting languages necessarying to create SVG animation?"

and (b) Do you concur with this article that scripting languages are the "wave" of the future.

http://www.itworld.com/AppDev/1262/itw-0314-rcmappdevint/

Please note while on the subject of Opera that it now works just fine on the Adove SVG Viewer 6.0 Preview version: This is Opera 7.22.

Thanks,

Muzz

Hi Muzz,

It depends what you mean by a 'scripting language'.

WebDwarf V2 exports to SVG without any external 'spiting languages'.

Hi Derry,

Animations come along with a .js file; which I presume is a javascript file; which I presume is the motor behind the animation??

Regardless of the the exact purpose; animations do come with a .js file; and this I gather is what Opera objects to according to what I was told in the Opera forum.

a) Is is possible to animate SVG using its animation elements or by scripting the DOM. Web Engine uses JavaScript in the latter approach.

b) He may be right but I don't think it is relavant to an argument about Javascript in web browsers. He is talking about using dynamically typed languages in cases where programming languages like C++ or Java are currenty used. JavaScript is not dynamically typed (not really typed at all)

Cheers,
Harpo

Thanks Harpo,

I can't claim to understand it all, but it is a big help. The Opera situation is a big puzzle given that Opera itself is about a 3 mb download, and the remaining 12 mb. is Java!!

The answer I received previously was from a forum member. Now I would like to hear what the staff have to say. There is, apparently or possibly, a DHTML issue involved here also.

I was writing an e-mail while you were writing this. OK??

Thanks,

Muzz

Hi Harpo,

My submission on SVG animation, and SVG in general, remains on "Open" status with Opera. That could mean many things; but I would like to think that they are at least pondering the issue.

Cheers,

Muzz
