Does anyone know if there is software that enables you to capture flash off a website and convert to animated gif?

You can certainly capture it -- just save the .swf file. Sometimes there may supporting files too, like images, so you need to save those -- after you identify them Smile

I have no idea about converting to animated gif -- maybe someone else does...

How do you save the .swf file?
If I right mouse click, it's a Flash menu items like back and play, etc.
How would I save the .swf file?

Thanks!

One way, in IE6 or Firefox, is to File > Save as "Web page, complete". This saves an HTML file and a folder containing images and other supporting files.

From that folder, pick out the .swf file -- and anything else interesting Smile

There are many programs out there on the market to capture swf's.Do a quick google search.
Now to turn one into a .gif I believe you will need either macromedia Flash or Swish max there are others that will convert but these two are the better options Flash being my favorite.
Of course there is the issue of "copyrite" so please only capture or convert your own swfs or have permission.
Another tool you WILL need is a .swf decompiler
What this tool will do is convert the .swf to .fla format which is what the orginal file was that made the swf. it will basically decompile (funny that) or in laymans terms break the swf down into its raw editable state.

There are other ways to capture .swfs as mentioned above.

Swishmax is cheaper- 99USD as opposed to Flash. If you look to buy swishmax, you can also buy swishvideo and swish___ (don't remember off the top of my head, but you can get the bundle for 150USD). Take a look, I know that it was well worth it for me.

Another option is On2 which makes the encoder for Flash 8.

I am partial to Camtasia Studio, I have never seen anything like it. It costs $299.00 but it is definitely worth it, and then some.

It does just about anything Flash, Micro-soft Movie maker, and most of the other video editing software can do. It imports instantly anything I have ever used. It exports to anything I would ever use. All with any support files you need automatically created. Ready for upload to a server where they stream like a dream.

I believe you can try it for 15 or 30 days for free. But if you do you will have to have to have it. You can even create user menus, and hotspots and callouts within the Flash movie, in minutes.

It is really a bargain at that price.

For editing GIF's, Alchemy Mind Workshop "Gif Construction Set Professional is pretty cool. It is one of the oldest and still one of the fasted methods of making and messing around with gif files. It may also import flash files but I don't know and am not sure. It is very inexpensive alone.
With the ready made add on's for special effects it can get expensive. But you don't need them.

Sincerely,

William McCormick
