Greetings, I am having one heck of a time linking pdf files to my already done Site Spinner PRO site. I want to nest the pdf files in a folder somewhere in my site and then link to them. The last time I built a site was in FrontPage where you just dragged and dropped the file in the file list and then linked to the file...Simple.
I love this software, its easy to use but I have came to a scretching halt at this point. I have begged for help and am getting some from Derry, but none of it makes any sense. Help

I suppose you have text object, title object or an image that you want your visitor to click on in order to download the pdf. Make a link from Link Editor or text Editor (if you use text object) and choose link type 'file'.

I got that part. How do I or what do I do with the actual file itself so that when I ftp to my web hoster it follows.

If you want SS to upload the PDF files for you and you want them in your root folder, then use the Foreign Object tool; select the Publish File type and use the Filepath button to locate you PDF file. If you have more than one PDF file, use multiple Publish File objects. After they are uploaded once, you can then delete the objects so they do not continue to upload every time you publish your project.

If you want your PDF files in another folder other than your root, then you will need to use an external FTP program such a Filezilla, which has a drag&drop interface (and its free).

if you use build-in Publisher in SS then the file will be uploaded. When you choose 'file' option in Link Editor you just need to specify the path to the pdf file on your computer. If you use an independent FTP client just place your pdf file in the root directory.

This is what screws me up. When I do the filepath thing, a box shows up on my linked page with faint writing in the background. Is that it? The pdf file will now follow when I ftp to my web hoster? What do I do with the box after that? Thanks in advance for all the help

The Foreign Object will be placed on your work page as an object box representing the file you have specified. When you choose a Publish File type, the file associated with the object will be uploaded to your site's root folder, but it will not appear on your site's page; it is used for file upload only.

When I do that in shows the file in the link editor but does not pop up when I go to Preview and test it.

The Publish File type object works when you publish. If you want to preview, copy the PDF file into your preview folder (a manual publish file operation).

You guys are talking over my head. What happened to plug and play simplicity. This seems to be way harder than it needs to be.

Have you seen the PDF Files tutorial under Help > Load Tutorials? That covers two easy ways to link to PDF files.

Because you want your PDF files in a special folder, that makes life a little more difficult. So following on from the tutorial, change the Publisher setting "External Files" or "Other Foreign Objects" to your designated PDF folder. (The setting depends on which method you use to link to your PDF files.) This will publish your PDF files to your designated PDF folder, and still allow you to preview without special fiddles.

This will cause problems if you have other Foreign objects in those categories -- they will appear in your PDF folder too. Let's cross that bridge if you come to it Smile

Bruceee, You state that I want to put the pdf's in a special folder. Thats the only way I know how to do it. The pdf files are on my workstation. I need to attach them to the site somehow, dont I? If I dont attach the files, once I upload my site wont they remain on my workstation. Thats the part that befuddles me.

If you don't want the PDF files in a special folder, then either of the tutorial methods will work.

If you publish with SiteSpinner's "gather" option set, SiteSpinner will make copies of your PDF files, and place them on your site, in a folder determined by your SiteSpinner settings. The originals of the PDFs will, of course, remain on your workstation.

If you want to control the location of the PDF folder, then you need the extra steps discussed earlier in this thread. If you don't, just publish and SiteSpinner will take care of copying the PDFs to the correct location.
