I'm using a template (business 3) and want each page to be a different length. When I change the length of one they all seem to change to that length. How can I change the background and length of each page individually?

Chances are that the objects you are changing are 'includes'. They will have the same attributes on all pages you include them on, especially size and position.

To change the include to a copy, one way is to:
  • Select the object
  • 'Cut' the object (don't 'delete' unless you want to remove it from all pages)
  • 'Paste' it back in the same position

Now you will be able to change the copy, and the changes you make won't influence the other pages.

I am having the same problem. I started with the business (store) template. The background behind my text and images is what seems to the culprit.

And I tried using the select and cut method but when I pasted it back, it became the top layer and covers over all of the text and objects (they used to be on top of this "background" -a blue color area) Perhaps I should do those pages with out ever using a template in a new project and just start oveer?

Cut and paste operations will usually put the pasted object on top of everything else. This way you can make changes to it. Use the Back button on the bottom tool bar to move it to the back when you are done with your changes.
