Hi yall.
Have a site ready to publish, built with SS Pro. All seems to be working fine except for my link to a .prc(mobi) file. Nothing to do with viewing the site on mobile, but a document in PRC format to be DLed to desktops, then sent to folks' mobile readers. Have linked to it as one does to other files....with the path to the file on my drive. When we click on the link on the Trial Site, we get the "Page Missing...404" message. It works fine in the local test publish page. Obviously I am doing something incorrectly, but I cant figure out what! Trial page is at http://trialsites.ihostvm.com/...L3new%20release.html Thanks, Setter |

Not very familiar with mobi designs yet, but read a little into it and have seen some small points. Firstly, did you make sure that you have your layout chosen to do both desktop and mobile? If not there is a very helpful tutorial within SS to walk you through this. Also, have you scaled your project to the appropiate sizes? Probably best to view the tutorial and go from there. Good luck! |

Thanks, but that isnt the problem. I dont care about the site being available to mobile devices, but I do have a Mobipocket file Im trying to make available thru the site. Folks could down load it with their PRC(mobi) reader program on their PCs then transfer it to their mobile device.
I dont know why I cant just link to it as if it is any other file---say a PDF for instance. It isnt a Foreign Object or media type file.... |

I wouldn't want to point out something that may be obvious, but did you upload this page/document? If you are trying to view it with the preview function hitting 'F8' will load all pages and allow you to test out all functions. If you use 'F7' it sometimes will not, unless previously viewed. However, if you are on the internet, on the page, and trying to download this file (and the page/document is not uploaded yet) you will receive this error. The only other option I can suggest is to make sure you are selecting a file upload for "OPEN IN PRC(MOBI) FORMAT". Make sure this file/document is located on the host and that you can link to it. |

I have checked and re-checked the paths here in the builder. I watch the file load in the Export Progress window...but at the end of the transfer I keep getting the message that that file (and only that one) "was not found" So, no, it is not uploaded, nor uploading to my host. I have a request in to them to see if for some reason, they are not set up to support the format. Its the only other thing I can think of with a dead brain. Thanks for you comments. Lets see what I find out. |

If your Export Progress window reports the file is not found, then you need to find the reason for that.
If you are making a file type link to the .prc file, then SiteSpinner should automatically find it and upload it. The spaces in the file name may cause problems so I suggest shorten the file name by removing the spaces and the dash: ie, change "Sweet Afters - Read These Lips Volume 3.prc" to SweetAftersReadTheseLipsVolume3.prc If that doesn't help, try shortening the file name still further to about 8 characters. |

Thanks Bruceee..
My host doesnt have any difficulty with PRC files, so I am gonna give your idea a try. There are a couple other long-named files that got sucked up just fine. Tis certainly a confusion to me. Gotta be zombies in my 'puter. Ill let ya know if it works. |

Whoo Hoo! That worked, kinda.
I shortened to a tiny name first...didnt work! I moved the file to the desktop (for no particular reason) and it got sucked right up. Why would shortening the name make a difference? It just makes my brain hurt sometimes. Thanks for your help, gents. |

There must be some restriction on file name length. I had a feeling it was around 40 characters -- if so, at 39 characters you were getting real close.
The path length may get into it too -- maybe the path to your desktop is shorter than the path to the previous location? |

I see. Hmmm. Just looked at characters in the other files and they are all shorter.
And, yes, the path to my desktop was shorter. I have learnt something new today. Makes it a good day. :-) Thanks again and please tell New Zealand I said Hello. Was there many years ago, just passed thru Wellie tho. It is an gorgeous country! My kingdom for a Star Trek transporter.... |

Using a File type link, I just tested a dummy prc file of about 60 characters length from a folder on my desktop and that transferred for me OK. Also tried one with the exact name that you used and that also worked for me.
So the file name length or bad character theory is disproven. There probably is a limit, but for this example, it has to be beyond 60 characters. Of course, the usual advice of keeping file names short and using letters and numbers only still applies, although does not seem to be the cause of your problem. Windows gets into the act here too -- if Windows reports a file as not being found, SS just has to accept that. I remember another case we discussed here with a similar problem which turned out to be a not-so-reliable network drive. So perhaps we'll have to blame Windows for this one. Like you, I rather fancy a Star Trek transporter -- and a time travel machine too. New Zealand -- if you are reading this, Setter said Hello. |
