I am getting close to finishing my website but am coming to the conclusion that it may be way too large. I've included numerous images and the last test I published on the free 24-hour trial showed a file size of 2700 KB. Is this way over the top? Would such a website take ages to download? Before I start trimming, I need to have some idea of what is too big.

Many thanks,

Chris McGowan

Fewer and fewer people are using dial-up these days (Bruce is the only hold out I know), so page size means less when people use broadband connections. But a fast loading page is always appreciated, so anything you can do to speed it up is welcomed.

After I build a site, I run it through this site tool. It reports on how fast the page loads under various comm speeds and provides info on what it thinks are problem areas and suggestions to fix them.

And why is Bruce still on dial-up?

Maybe it has something to do with "The Land of the Long White Cloud".

If his country's government could see their way clear to reduce the sheep population, that would also greatly reduce the amount of flatulance, thereby reducing the size of the Long White Cloud.

That way, Bruce may be able to achieve a satellite connection.

I'd still shoot for the minimum size possible. Sometimes broadband connections are not very "broad", and some have data caps. So those users too will appreciate lean, mean, fast-loading pages. And what about mobile users?

Broadband is available here, but I have got round to getting it yet. I find dialup to be reliable, no data cap, variable IP addresses, and can use it from any computer. And no need to change my email address. But even so, I'll only be able to hold out for a little longer....

Postyr: You're right about the sheep -- they outnumber humans here by about 10:1. The government is comprised entirely of sheep, so I don't think they will be taking any action to reduce their numbers Smile
