I have never explained my passionate distaste for things Microsoft and never intend to publicly. Suffice to say that they are very serious and deeply profound.
Since my last post under "Gritty Volunteers" I have done some further investigations of the performance of IE, Avant, SlimBrowser, and Opera under various XP configurations. My conclusion is this: Providing one operates in Microsoft Mode with HTML and SVG Mime types set to IE; and possibly contintent on unknown factors involving one's ISP; IE, SlimBrowser, and Avant will display straight SVG files; and embedded SVG with sound. Opera will not display animated SVG in any format. There was always one and only one situation which would either force me out of SVG completely, or curtail my efforts thereof --- and that situation is precisely the one. Although I shall reflect deeply upon the matter for several days; I would guess that my days as a full fledged SVG pioneer are now over. May someone else pick up the proverbial ball until or unless Opera changes it ways; or I can find a way to make "sodipodi" fill in the gap; or I find a yet unknown alternative. With much regret and a very empty feeling, Muzz |

My post on the matter in the Opera Forum --- picking up on a response to my earlier posting on the matter.

Lack of script support for properly served xhtml just sucks." ' Thanks to all of you for the information on SVG. It is strange to me that SVG is not a bigger item in this forum given its potential to challenge or outstrip Flash. But that is not my main point -- which is again slightly off topic here. The core of my design work is Virtual Mechanics "Web Engine V2 Beta: a DHTML, SVG editor with much potential under very active development. Revolving around that I make heavy use of .jpg files, massaging them with such editors as "Image Analyzer" (superb), Makaha, EasyPeg, XnView, Icrop, DeKnop and so forth. My stress lately, however, has been on SVG animation, and, as I refuse to use IE, I was brought to a grinding halt by Opera's lack of capability to animate SVG. I have supported Opera since version 5.10 and always regarded them as pioneers. I guess I was wrong, and this spells the end of my association with the Opera Browser and my promotion of it unless they intend to do something about it --- and quickly. Internet Explorer and its dependents Avant Browser and Flash Peak Slim Browser all support SVG animation. Given the rising significance of SVG and its official W3C status, I guess that reduces Opera to a second rate browser. Sorry for the speech, but SVG is one heck of a tool and I just can't swallow that Opera would be so blind to a burgeoning opportunity. Shame on you Opera. You should be leading the Scalable Vector Graphics field, not sitting in a pre-historic swamp. Disappointed and looking for a progressive browser, Robert C. Smith Muzz""" Serious business guys. Hello,
In a pre-emptive situation, the moral issues become quite complex. There is, for instance, only one Internet, initially funded and developed by the US taxpayer via the US Government via the Military and Academia. The ethics of this issue are intricate and will be published in my home site. The summary position, arrived at after many hours of thought and discussion, is that the very act of using Windows XP is, of course, to use Internet Explorer. In turn, to give up Windows is to give up, amongst many other investments, Web Engine. This in turn would be to desert my Client and a developing major opportunity at a critical juncture. Are you, in the final analysis, doing what is right, when in trying to correct a wrong, you only hurt yourself further than is the original situation you are trying to rectify? What is the proper way, in other words, to fight the little would-be dictator's of the world. Well, my summary answer is contained in the following: while I regard it as immoral to initiate the use of force; it is not immoral to retaliate with force. The little men of the world shall not rule my life. I shall not give up on SVG (or this forum) except on my terms; I SHALL NOT YIELD TO small, PETTY MINDS. Still a serious matter, but, no, sorry folks, I am not leaving. Muzz |

But then again, it is definitely the end of an era for I see little justification in continuing to publish on SVG even if I were a more accomplished author.
SVG, a tool with tremendous potential which so many are strangely blind to, is obviously of litle significance to this forum; OR; I, with all my pontifications, turned an otherwise fascinating subject into something to avoid. I admit to failure and now I move on. Muzz |
