I would like to know if, once I have uploaded my web site, I can then make changes to the web site from a different PC with the SiteSpinner software loaded on it. I am going to be the main person updating our web page, from my home location, for our church. My pastor would like to be able to update it also, but from his office location with another copy of the SitrSpinner software loaded on it. Is this possible? If so how do we do it? Basically we will have two different PC's which need to be able to update the web site. Can it be download from our web hosting company, edited and then uploaded?

Thanks

Jay

Hi Jay

Yes absolutely no problem. It doesn't matter how many PC's you want to use you can do it.

The only thing you need is your servers user name, ftp address and password. With this information you just put it into SS using any pc and then you can access your files to up/download them Smile

Sorry I can't be specific with the actual settings etc in SS as I don't use it myself but if you need help with that just shout ( well quietly ! ) and help will soon come.

Happy web building and welocme to the Forum Big Grin

Andy.

p.s. My god I think I've done enough posting for at least 3 months, phew, need a break !

Hello Jay,

Sure, as Andy says, there is no problem uploading your changes from any computer, but there are other problems you need to be aware of.

The changes you make will only be kept in the .ims file (project file) of the computer that made the changes.

For instance, you make your site and upload it. You give your pastor a copy of the project file, and he wants to make some changes. That's okay, he uploads the changes to the site.

All of a sudden, you realise that he made some terrible spelling mistakes, or omitted a link or whatever. You make some changes on your project file, but your file won't contain the changes the other person made.

One way around this is to make sure that the default setting of SS that "Auto backup project file when publishing" is turned on. That way, each person that wants to make changes can first download the latest update, and make their alterations to that.

But now we have another problem. What about images and links to files etc?

When you publish, the project file is resaved, so if the person publishing the project doesn't have the images or files on their own computer, the publishing process will come up with errors.

I am not real sure that if at this stage you proceed, if it will work. In theory, the files are already on your site, but I'm also sure that the resulting published project would result in broken links. Someone with a bit more experience than me like Bruce or Larry could probably clarify that.

The only way I can see around that problem, is to set each users computers folders exactly the same. That is, have copies of all associated files (images, pdf files etc) in exactly the same folder (or sub-folders) names on a drive of the same letter.

This response may sound a little long winded, but I'm sure that if you (and others with access to your site) follow all of the above procedures, you should be able to achieve you goal okay.
