I am using site spinner... Ok I made a page, published it, but forgot to save my work and lost the page... BUT, I went to the internet and there it was.... so I went back to site spinner , went to 'Publish" and selected FTP and saw the page there... question is, how can I recapture the page html and put it back onto my work space as I created it.. so i can modify ? Is there a way?????
Thanks in advance...
Ron

When you published, if you used 'Auto Backup Project File WhenPublishing' then alongside your page you should see your .ims project file. Use an independent FTP client like FileZilla and simply download that file and open it in SS.

I did check the SS publisher and Auto Backup Project file is checked.... now when you say "Next to your page you should see .ims project file... That I don't see, not for that page anyway as all of the extensions are .html except for the index, which has the ims project extension....
If i understand correctly, if i use an independent ftp tool, and I download the web page, I won't be able to open it without the .ims extension ... correct?
Second question, why does my page not have the ims extension? Am I looking in the wrong place?
Another question, if there is auto back-up, where is it backup'd to?

In the same place (root directory on your server) where you can see your published page you should be able to see your project file with .ims extension. If you use SS or SSPro and create all your pages in one project then you should have only one .ims file on the server with all pages included. It's not the html page you need to download using an independent ftp client. What you need is your project file i.e. the .ims file, which you can open using SS. Autobackup is backing up the project file to the server you publish your pages to.

Re-reading Ron’s second post, I think he may be getting a little confused as to the .ims file.

Ron, you say that all of your pages are .html except for the index, which is .ims.

It sounds like you have named your actual project index. Therefore, you should have two index files, one index.html (your actual home page) and one index.ims (your SS project back-up file).

If you do not have an index.html, no one will be able to view your site.

As Roma explained, it is the .ims file you need. It will not work on your site and is purposely placed there as a backup for occasions like yours.

thanks Klimt and Postyr, I read both of the posts and it does make more sense. You are right postyr, i did indeed name my whole project index.... actually I have only had one project from day one, several years ago and that was my website... I recall someone telling me the first page needed to be named 'Index' so that is ho the whole project got named that way...
I did get filezilla and that works great and my page is properly saved.

BUT, that brings up another situation, let me explain... Ok in the publisher, it shows me the local publish directory is My IMS Projects. Ok I found this on my computer.... in that folder I have a sub folder called MySite... in there is a copy of every web page in that project, all with html extensions... I see no where in SS that anything is saved with .ims... if there was I would not have had the problem...
A while back I started a folder to put my old webpages, not knowing IMS PROJECTS/MYSITE folders were there... before I deleted a page from FTP in the publisher I would "Save As", (in SS)name it whatever and put it in the folder. All of those files are .ims.... because I manually saved them in SS...

Here is the problem I found.... I am looking at the folder "My Site" and there are no entries in over two years.... and yes I have been actively woorking with the site and publishing....The last page saved was in Feb. 2008, and nothing since. My question is, why not? The publisher says they are going there?????

You are probably looking at an old version of your MySite Folder -- I think SiteSpinner changed the location a few versions ago.

To find the location of your current publish folder, open the Publisher > Pages tab and look for the name of the Local Publish Directory listed there. Then copy and paste that path into a Windows Explorer address bar -- that should take you to the real directory.

If you don't have a .ims project file there, you may have auto-backup off.

Also if you have more than one publish profile set, each one can have its own different publish directory.

You nailed it Bruceee... BUT this was my fault... I am so dumb sometimes.... but I'll tell on myself so that maybe someone else won't make the same mistake.
The IMS Projects folder I was looking at, is in the same place as the other, my documents... I didn't even realize there were two folders... mistake was... My "my documents" is very big and I had trouble finding stuff, so I renamed the folder by putting an 'A' in front of My IMS Projects folder title... effectively moving the location.... when it backed up, SS couldn't find the folder... and it went into a new one that SS must have created....
point is, when it comes to website files/folders, and SS, don't move anything!
Thanks for your help everyone. I usually create my own trouble and have to cry HELP from you all to get it fixed.... Thanks again. I think I have everything figured out now....

Just as a side note, when I create a new project, I use the “Save as” option, thereby overriding the default folder location.

I created a new folder on my C drive named “Web Design”, and a subfolder to that called “Projects”.

In the projects folder, I again have different folders for the various programs I use, Such as Site Spinner, menu building programs, codes, scripts etc.

That way, I keep it all general and can (usually) find what I want.

Like Postyr I've developed a method of storing website content.

I have/create the following folders for each project

Raw assets: Unprocessed images from the camera or client
Raw Documents: Word etc docs sent to me for inclusion or pdf'ing
Web ready assets: Images that have been photoshopped and are ready to go.
Web ready Documents: Downloadable documents - ready to go
Site: This is where I publish to locally

Splitting Raw and web ready assets means that if I need to re-render an image or use it in two different ways then I'm never without the original.

In SS, I only load images and files from the web ready assets or web documents folders

A place for everything and everything in its place!

New project, create the folder structure and away you go!

Good luck with the new website

Good ideas Andrew, thank you....
I had a good look at my decuments and my website files today... for one site, which is relatively small, i have 21 seperate folders, all spread around "my documents"... I don't dare re-name anything at this point or I'll get a lot of empty placeholders....
reading these posts I also came up with a good filing system and I'm making copies of a lot of the files I intend to re-use on the new site....(not moving anything now)
My new project will all be in one spot, C drive and include all of the files and folders for that site only....
I think what happened when I first started with SS I knew ZERO about creating a website or publishing it, and didn't know much more about saving and filing on my computer. That is how everything got so unorganized. But yes I too have folders for photos etc, that are the link source for that project....
Thanks to everyone for the tips...

Don't worry too much about empty placeholders. I would suggest that you decide on how you want your files/folders organised as a first step. It helps to write/draw it down on a piece of paper to get the feel. Think about all elements that are included in your project; images, external files like flash, audio and maybe also the codes you use in the project. Create a folder with subfolders using the structure you've decided on. Copy all the files to the assigned folder for that type of files. When everything is in place and when you have time go through the objects in your project and change the directory. It might feel like a daunting task but if you take one page at the time now and then it's really not so bad. Here I've shared some of my own ideas on the subject. It's just something that worked for me when I had only few projects to handle.
