Anyone here know typically how a domain name transfer works? Last year I began my website by free offer from Jumpline.com and now I would like to transfer my domain name to Godaddy.com. It’s been 2 weeks, both parties instructing me how to do it, but nothing is happening.
According to Jumpline I should 1. Disable domain locking and 2. Have an authorization code should make the transfer possible. On the other hand Godaddy requesting an email administrative contact, which is deemed to be whois_privacy@jumpline.com, before transfer can be accomplished. My question is who should be the administrative contact is point? According to INTERNIC Registrars registrar contact seems to indicate that it’s whois.tucows.com. What is the difference between who is server and the registrar? I am confused as to the procedure and maybe some knowledgeable person could push me in the right direction. TS |

The registrar is the entity (company, group, whatever) that holds/maintains your domain name registration records. In your case, this appears to be tucows.com.
Part of the information in your registration records is where your domain is hosted. This information is resolved by using domain name servers (DNS). These are computers, usually maintained by hosting companies, that tell the network that your site can be found at a certain IP address. Since you have a Jumpline account, your DNS records point to the Jumpline DNS servers. Normally, all you need to do is alter the registrar's records to point your domain to the name servers for your new host provider. Looking at the Jumpline support pages, this is supposed to be available via the customer manager, but it looks like this option has disappeared in the new customer manager pages. The instructions I found to do this is here. You might want to email tech support and find out where they put this option in the new customer manager panels. Once you can access your DNS records, make sure you have a GoDaddy account, then change the DNS records to point to the GoDaddy name servers (there will be two, a primary and a secondary). |

As Larry has fully explained, and once you have opened your account opened with GoDaddy, you can change your DNS by clicking here

Thank you both for your input. I’m always appreciative of Larry, who always taking time out to help someone out.
Here was the story on transferring domain name that consumed countless emails and my time. Godaddy has internal administrative tasks, which according to Godaddy normally should take only 5-7 days to accomplish. Series of email confirmations and creation of security code, transaction id for registrar approval are required. On the other hand, Jumpline requires only that domain link disabled and provide authorization code. It happened that Godaddy email support is less than stellar. Godaddy has ready made formula, prescription emails that the support thinks is the solution to the problem. They kept recycling the same solutions by which I should send a transfer request to Jumpline through Godaddy’s email confirmation system. When Jumpline totally ignored or never received these email requests, Godaddy froze in their own tracks. No further actions were possible. (See the red arrow, the step where Godaddy had the problem.) As it turn out the authorization code that they were seeking from the email was right at their door step, which I gave repeatedly. I think it was a sheer case of incompetence and inflexible bloated Godaddy administration. Or I don’t want to be cynical but it may just have been a ploy for needing me to talk to a representative in the mean time, so they may up grade my hosting plan. TS |

Domain transfers performed by changing registrars is the most complicated and time consuming process I have ever found. Once I found out that all I really needed to do was change domain name servers, things are a lot simpler as I can do it myself.
GoDaddy is the registrar for most of my domains and their domain account control panel gives me access to the DNS records. I have moved one account from GoDaddy to MSN Live to Jumpline and it only takes about 2 or 3 hours for the DNS change to replicate through the network. |
