I am having a problem with publishing a 493 page google xml site map I created at: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

I imported my site map into object editor Link type [file] "find file" and am getting an "Error" (Oops! Page Not Found) when trying to open my site map URL: www.picnicproductsgalore.com/sitemap.xml

(I also tried to publish using FileZilla and seems to accept but can't find in FileZilla folder)

I must be missing something, can someone help me solve this problem?

Thanks, Doug

Are you saying that you uploaded the file to your site using Filezilla, but it did not show up in the site's panel in Filezilla? This would mean that the file is not uploading.

It would be very strange if your host is rejecting XML files since this is the standard method for data transfer on the web. But check to see if this file type is valid for your server. It should be in the host's FAQs.

Hi Larry,
I have upload 5 websites Sitemaps before and no problem with the host.

I first tried to upload from
sitespinner "Objects)not sure why it didn't go, so tried dragging it into FileZilla and doesn't seem to work there either. I am not sure if I am doing it right?

Compressed version from XML-Sitemaps.com (83kb)
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/do...lore.com/sitemap.xml

FileZilla:
I first open Site Manager and connect to the host.
I then drag the XML file from my folder into the "Filename" folder (lower right hand corner of FileZilla)

Is that the correct process? Any thoughts?

I have not been able to find anything in FileZilla FAQ
referring to this.

Thanks, Doug

Yes, dragging the file from the left (local) filename window to the right (remote) filename window should put the file on your server. If it is not showing up when you do this, the only thing I can think of is to make sure the Remote Site window has the proper directory highlighted before you move the file and that you have permission to put the file there. The file should be placed in your root directory.

If you are comfortable with using FileZilla, then that is the way to go.

If you want to use SiteSpinner to do the upload, then I suggest you use a Foreign Object in Format of "Publish File" -- select from the drop-down list.

A file type link as you used it may have sent the file to a folder that is not your root folder. Maybe a Code folder -- which is not where you want it.

Brucee or Larry,
Frankly I am not comfortable with FileZilla.

I have used the foreign Object option before but can't find it now.
I opened the Object in Object drop down and can't find it there. I went to the publish Project file and can't find it there.
I'm a little slow, if you wouldn't mind giving me step by step.

Thanks, Doug

If you changed from SS basic to SS Pro then the 'Import Foreign Object' is renamed 'Embed File or Media' from the Object menu.

Roma,
Thank you for the info. They should fix the online help page that still list Foreign Object/Media option.
I had upgraded to SS Pro and wasn't sure about that function.

Imbed File or Media
I Selected Publish file in the format drop down. Imported the XML file to the Filepath and clicked OK. and noted a gray Publish icon appeared on my Index page. Is that correct. Should I now publish that page with the Publish Icon on it?? Thanks, Doug

Yes. The important thing to select "Publish File" as the Format for your embedded file -- which you have done.

Brucee,

Still not sure how to get it to show up on the web. I tried publishing the page that "imbedded Publish Place holder" popped up on.

This is the URL for the sitemap.
http://www.picnicproductsgalore.com/sitemap.xml

The grey placeholder is normal for Embed a File or Media (previous called "Foreign Object"), so that is nothing to worry about.

Can you browse your site and find that sitemap file anywhere? (You can do this with your SiteSpinner FTP browse function). The file clearly isn't in your root folder.

My guess is that you have uploaded it but not to the right folder -- your root folder. So another item worth checking is in the Publisher > Pages tab > Sub Folders button. The "External Files" category should be blank -- this will direct files of Format "Publish File" to your root folder.

Next time you publish, you could also check that SS has actually published the file sitemap.xml and where it placed it. Look in the export progress window.

Brucee,

I tried to publish the XML site map again but with no success.

I checked the Browse function and not listed.
I checked the pages > sub-folder > "external file" and it is blank.
I am not sure how to check the "Export Progress window" for placement. With 493 pages I have to publish incrementally (a couple hours)
Do I have to re-publish the entire website to "look" at the progress window. I assume I would scroll up the export window and see if I can identify. If it is there, what then?

Sorry I am such a num num in this regard.

I have published this site before and am trying to update with no success...?
I am obviously missing something...

Thanks, Doug

You need publish only the page which contains the foreign object.

As we can't expand the export progress window to make for easier viewing, what I do is this:
  • Right click the file transfer details
  • From the context menu, click "Select All"
  • Ctrl+C to copy to the Windows clipboard
  • From there, paste into a Text Editor -- the one in SS is fine

Having done that, if you can't make any sense of it, continue on and paste into a post here.

Thanks everyone for your help. I messed up I discovered that I had named the sitemap in my folder incorrectly. Roll Eyes
I dragged the incorrectly named file from my folder into FileZilla as "Picnic Products Sitemap"
I corrected to to read sitemap.xml and that solved the problem...www.picnicproductsgalore.com/sitemap.xml

Sometime I wonder how I get up in the morning.... Red Face
