Hi everybody, Newbie here. I am Rod from Adelaide, South Australia. Just wanted to introduce myself and start asking some lame questions. Could not find an appropriate place for introductions - so i hope this is OK.

At 53 years old - i have only had a computer for a couple of years. We have a professional building a website for our family business, and we are about to launch a secondary business on a shoe string budget, so i have to build a website myself. Scoured the internet for a decent DIY program - found Site Spinner and here i am.

Have spent a couple of nights teaching myself, and although i find it challenging, i have succeeded in building a couple of experimental pages. Even downloaded a program ( Batch Pro ) to resize images and can now fit them on a page.

I am having a problem with page size. The tutorial suggests 800 x 600 - but it seems very small to me? I see some websites with long pages. How do they do this? I need plenty of photos on the pages - together with plenty of text. The product is CNC Routers, and i want to show photos and prices on the front page before going into more detail/ specifications on other pages.Hence the need for a long front page.

If i can actually build this site - it will be a miracle of modern technology.

Thanks in advance.

Rocket.

You can use a custom screen target resolution. Just set the Options->Project Options->Target Resolution 4th option and enter your desired width and length.

This is a design tool and sets the borders on the work page to give you an idea of what the page would look like when viewed in a browser window of those dimensions.

If you use the page centering option (Page Editor->Special Effects), the target width is an issue since the page must be centered within the target resolution width, but the length can be safely exceeded (that's what scrollbars are for), but I suggest you do not use a very long page. If would be better if you categorized your products and used multiple pages with a menu to allow your visitors to move nack and forth.

larryd, Looks to be pretty straightforward then.

Will experiment by trying a few custom sizes, adding a bit of text and then hitting the preview button.

Have actually surprised myself getting this far.

Thankyou very much for your assistance.

Rocket,

Just as Larryd has pointed out, do try to have your home page (or landing page) to be the size of your computer monitor (preferably without having to scroll). This way if you have your particular audience checking your site (i.e. engineers) they will see exactly what they are looking for from the start.
I actually worked with an industrial advertising company and they informed me of some pretty good tricks. If you need any help, drop me a line admin@LHGoldens.com.

Good Luck!

Hi WebLegacy, Appreciate your suggestions.

You hit the nail on the head. These machines are to be Imported from China, and we will sell them at minimal markup. So the price is going to be very attractive for intending buyers. There are primarily 8 models that we will promote, and the whole idea is to show the prices on the home page - maybe with thumbnail images and minimal text showing individual prices. The idea being to click on the thumbnails to go to individual pages for each machine which will show specifications.

We have a uni student working for us who is very computer savvy. We are going to sit down and try to work it out.

Thanks for your offer - i may be in touch with you.

Glad I could help. Check out this site. This is where I received some assistance. They are an industrial advertising site. I know that you can advertise with them for free, or pay a nominal fee for better advertising.
My suggestion is to browse your competition, gather ideas, and then formulate your project to meet your( and your customers') needs. Like before, let me know if you need help admin@LHGoldens.com.

Good Luck!!
