Most commercial systems like eve provide a la carte services, so the chat feature would probably run around $200US a month. So far only one person has expressed interest which would not make it very cost effective.
I'm grateful that this forum is here at all. I wouldn't want to have VM waste money. If it were something that were free or cheap to them, that would be great. But I doubt y'all could justify spending that, and I don't blame you one bit. The interaction among people on this forum is more uniformly positive than on any other forum I have been on, and I would hate to see that diminished in any way. I don't know if a chat room or bar would weaken or strengthen that. Anyway, I thank you for having what you have for it has been so valuable to me and every member. Dan
Just my five cents on the subject. I think that the chat suggestion is not such a bad idea. Interactivity is sometimes helpful for shy people. Even from VM's point of view it could be of a certain marketing value. Not only the company provides great products but even the users forums would stand out in comparison with competitors. Incomparable customer service.
The idea has pro's and con's. Although as Klimt said it has got some pretty good selling points, it also falls down with money issues like larry mentions.
Although I'd be up for a chat feature I'd have to remember that alot of the users are from around the world so being on at the same time would be niggly. On top of that anything that was talked about, would there be history of it? I wouldn't want to ask for some help if I had to copy and paste the answer every time.
Perhaps there could be a new part for chat? Perhaps that'd just fall in "web General Discussion".
Also:- I'd like to point out that I'm still showing an interest in larry's proposal of a chat room on his site.

Since it does not cost me anything, and as a trial, I have enabled a chat room from my site. Currently, it is set up as an open chat room (no registration required) but you do need to log-in (to get a chat handle). It is also not moderated, so please watch your manners.
On reflection, I think that this forum, is second to none, and works very well as it is. If it ain't broke, let's not keep fixing it until it is. On the other hand, a live chat facility for members, hosted outside of VM, such as Larry's, could be a valuable asset to everyone.
Hi Larry, It's a great initiative. I've got the following messages though: Notice: Undefined variable: phpTrafficA in K:\Apache2\sitespinner\phpTraffic\write_logs.php on line 47 e: Undefined offset: 3 in K:\Apache2\sitespinner\phpTraffic\Php\log_function.php on line 478
My hit counter software did not like the chat room! Should be fixed now, but I cannot keep stats on its use. Oh well.
Robo, mail form should be working now. Looks like I forgot to upload the pages. (The problem with having a project broken down into many small project is you need a checklist to make sure it is all published.)
