Don't think this exists, but I wish it did!
I got into the habit of regularly publishing pages to my FTP site - with "Auto backup project file - on remote site" ON. Then I accidentally deleted an "include" (a menu that only took me 3 weeks to create!) instead of "cutting" it. Of course, my on-line backup was an exact mirror of my local ims file, so my menu had disappeared for ever! As a result of this, I have turned OFF "Autobackup ims file on remote server". (that could be dangerous too!) So if my ims file could be backed up to my hard drive automatically at user-programmable intervals, I could never again lose important elements. |

I know this isn't what you are wanting, but I use the save as feature a lot and upload several versions to my website whenever I make significant changes. This gives me options even when I republish the project as I still have dated versions to resort to if something went wrong. These are also stored via backup (Acronis True Image) which is helpful for all kinds of things including hard drive failures.
I think the downfall to what you are wanting is that average users would have a folder full of ims files that could have the potential of filling up precious hard drive space- especially if you have big files or multiple projects (if you are doing this as a business and make projects for others.) j razz www.jrazzcreations.com |

-- I agree, that would be a useful feature. There is the problem J Razz mentioned of filling up your hard disk. Also we'd want to avoid users inadvertently editing a backup copy rather than the current version -- there could be scope for great confusion there |

YES. I agree. So Automatic Backup should be OFF by default - but available for folks who want to switch it on. |

What I would think might help would be to leave the back up to server as it is currently, then in addition add these three options...
A) add an option to browse and set a location on your hard drive where IMS files would be stored. Since that does not really help Mikemesure I would think a second function to be added to both the back up to server AND back up to drive would be... B) a checkbox that would trigger time stamping to the end to the IMS file name giving you files with a history of your changes. Since this would freak j razz and others out concerning precious disk space, if virtual mechanics really wanted to get fancy they could add one last feature... C) have an option that when time stamping was enabled it would use what I like to call "grandfathering" this option would check for previous timestamped backups and remove older version allowing only three backups at any given time (grandfather, father, and baby) Everybody happy? LokiZ Unfortunately Life is not math...it's English. There is always an exception to the rule. |

For what its worth, there are several free and low-cost version control systems available that will keep backups for you by keeping only the differences between your original and additional edits. This saves space and gives you the ability to rollback to any previous version. You can also add comments and they work on binary files too.

What I do personally is to always 'save as' when I work on a project file in a new month. So, if I am working on my 'boat' project, I save it as MyBoat-march-07.ims I don't rename it that month, but if the next time I am editing it in the summer, I would change it to MyBoat-july-07.ims (or MyBoat-feb-07.ims if you are Bruceee).
